Deciding to get your first tattoo is exciting… and it is normal to feel a little nervous too. At Púrpura Tatuajes, our tattoo studio in Puerto Vallarta, we guide first-timers every week. This guide answers the most common questions so you arrive calm and clear on everything.
1. Choose a design you connect with
It does not have to be perfect or deep: it has to mean something to you. Gather references, think about size and placement, and let your artist advise you on what works best on skin long term. For a first tattoo, fine line and small designs are a great choice.
2. Choose the right studio
The most important thing: hygiene and professionalism. Make sure they use new disposable needles, sterile equipment and gloves, and that the place is clean. Check the artist’s portfolio and that their style matches what you want.
3. Prepare for the day
- Sleep well and eat before your appointment.
- Stay hydrated and avoid alcohol for 24 hours beforehand.
- Wear comfortable clothing with easy access to the area.
- Bring your ID; you must be of legal age.
4. What to expect during the session
First the design is created or adjusted and a stencil is placed on your skin to check position and size. Then the tattooing begins. You will feel a tolerable discomfort, like a constant scratch. Breathe, relax and let us know if you need a break: you are in control.
5. Aftercare
Healing is key to the final result. Follow your artist’s instructions: wash with mild soap, moisturize with a little ointment, do not scratch and —very important in Vallarta— no sun or sea for the first weeks. After that, always use sunscreen.
Common first-timer questions
Does it hurt a lot? It depends on the area and the person, but it is usually more bearable than imagined. How much does it cost? It varies by size, detail and placement; we quote you before we start. Could I regret it? That is why you should take your time choosing; a well-thought-out design is something you enjoy for life.
