Does getting a tattoo hurt? Pain map and how to prepare

Does getting a tattoo hurt? Pain map and how to prepare

It is the number one question before getting tattooed, and the short answer is: yes, you feel it, but it is more bearable than most people imagine. At Púrpura Tatuajes we have tattooed thousands of people in Puerto Vallarta, and almost all of them leave saying "it was not that bad." Here is the truth, no exaggeration.

What does it actually feel like?

Most people describe it as a constant scratch or burn, like scraping your skin. It is not a sharp pain and, above all, it is completely tolerable. Plus, your body gets used to it as the session goes on.

Pain map: where it hurts more and less

More sensitive areas (closer to bone or with nerve endings): ribs, sternum, spine, hands and fingers, feet, neck, inner arm and knees.

More bearable areas (more muscle or fat): forearm, upper arm (biceps), calf, thigh, shoulder and outer leg. If it is your first tattoo, these areas are ideal.

What affects how much it hurts

  • The body area (the most important factor).
  • Your personal pain threshold.
  • The size and length of the session.
  • Your rest, food and hydration that day.

How to prepare to feel less

  • Sleep well the night before.
  • Eat something before the appointment; never arrive on an empty stomach.
  • Stay hydrated and avoid alcohol for 24 hours before.
  • Breathe deeply and relax; tensing up increases the discomfort.
  • Let us know if you need a break: no problem at all.

The pain fades, the art stays

Think of it this way: a few moments of discomfort in exchange for something you will carry forever. And with an artist who makes you feel comfortable, the experience can even be enjoyable.
