Getting tattooed in paradise comes with a small catch: the Puerto Vallarta climate —intense sun, ocean, humidity and sand— is exactly what a fresh tattoo needs to avoid while it heals. The good news is that with simple care your piece will heal perfectly and keep its color for years. Here is the complete guide from our studio.
The first hours
Follow your artist’s instructions to the letter. In general: keep the protective cover on for the recommended time, wash with water and mild soap, pat dry (do not rub) and apply a very thin layer of the recommended ointment.
The first days
- Wash the tattoo 2 or 3 times a day with clean hands.
- Moisturize with a small amount of fragrance-free ointment or cream.
- Do not scratch or pick at the scabs: itching is normal.
- Wear loose clothing that will not rub the area.
The golden rule in Vallarta: no sun, no sea
While healing (at least 2 to 3 weeks) completely avoid direct sun, the ocean, pools and hot tubs. Salt or chlorinated water can cause infection and fade the ink, and sun on a fresh tattoo ruins the color and can leave marks. We know it is hard at the beach, but it is worth it.
Sunscreen is forever
Once healed, your best ally is sunscreen (SPF 50). The sun is ink’s number one enemy: it fades it and makes it dull. Applying it every time you are exposed will keep your tattoo crisp for years. In a beach city, this is non-negotiable.
Warning signs
A little redness and swelling is normal in the first days. But if you notice growing pain, heat, pus or fever, see a doctor. An infection caught early is easy to treat.
